Admissions

 Admissions Requirements 

 

1. The one-year full-time application for the September 2026 intake will be available on September 25, 2025.

​

2. Applications will be assessed in three rounds as outlined below:

​

First round:           12:00 noon (GMT +8), January 23, 2026

Second round:      12:00 noon (GMT +8), April 30, 2026

Third round:          12:00 noon (GMT +8), June 30, 2026

​

3. To be eligible for admissions to the programme, a candidate shall satisfy both the University Admissions   

    Requirements and the Programme Specific Requirements as listed below:

​

(a) shall comply with the General Regulations;

(b) shall hold

(i) a good Bachelor's degree of this University; or a qualification of equivalent standard from this University or another comparable institution accepted for this purpose; and

(ii) a good Bachelor's degree with a major in philosophy; or a good Bachelor's degree with a major in another subject with experience of studying issues relevant to AI, Ethics and Society; 

​

(c) for a candidate who is seeking admissions on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English, shall satisfy the University English language requirement applicable to higher degrees as prescribed under General Regulation G2(b).

The programme has its specific requirements for TOEFL and IELTS:

Minimum requirement

TOEFL: Internet-based test (iBT)

IELTS

Overall score of 80 with 25 in Writing

Band 7 with no subtest lower than 5.5

Note: 

​Starting from the 2026 intake, IELTS and TOEFL tests must be taken within two years prior to September 1 of each admissions year.

​

(d) shall satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination if required.

​

4. An application for exemption from the above requirements shall be considered on a case-by-case basis.

​

 Application 

5. Applications for this programme and payment of the application fee (HK$600 per application) should be submitted online at https://admissions.hku.hk/tpg.


6. After submitting the online application, applicants are required to upload the supporting documents before the application deadline and within four weeks from the date of the creation of their application account. A checklist of the required supporting documents is available at https://admissions.hku.hk/tpg/programme-list.


7. In order to support the University’s environmental friendly initiatives, documents uploaded to the system should NOT be delivered to the University by post in duplicate, except for the official score report of TOEFL.

 Composition Fee 

HK$300,000 (Subject to approval)

​

Candidates who have accepted a conditional offer will be required to make the first installment of composition fee. The amount of the deposit will be specified in the conditional offer letter.

​

 Faculty of Arts Scholarship for Local Students 

Faculty of Arts established the “Faculty of Arts Scholarship for Local Students” to recognise the outstanding achievements of local students and encourage their pursuit of further study.

 MAAIES Entrance Scholarship 

 

Our programme also established an Entrance Scholarship for students admitted into the programme to recognise their outstanding achievements.

​​

  • The scholarship shall be awarded each year to our students based on academic merit and interview performance.

  • Eligible students shall be automatically considered, with no application necessary.

  • The value of each scholarship shall be in range of 50% to 100% of the composition fee. The exact number of scholarships and the value of each scholarship shall be determined by the Selection Committee.

  • Should a candidate withdraw from or fail to complete the programme after being awarded the Scholarship, he/she is required to reimburse the amount awarded.
